Back from the Brink

Well, it has been the longest nine months of my life since I was last on my blog.  I could never fully describe the depths of what I saw and experienced.  In a nutshell, after a long and difficult battle, my sister succumbed to her cancer.  She passed away, at her home surrounded by friends and family, in late April. After everything I've seen, unfortunately, I don't have any real advice on how to deal with grief.  It is raw and real, like an ocean wave.  Sometimes it recedes and other times it pulls you under.  I've broken it down into forgetting and remembering.  Occasionally you forget how painful the experience was and is, and other times you remember. Remembering ranges from good times with that person to the pain of their suffering.  I haven't had any big life epiphany, except that I want to slow down and experience more.  The truth is life keeps going, it doesn't stop for you, and you have to make a choice.  You keep going with it or you don't. Some people can't handle the grief of loss, most notably Alexander McQueen after his mother, Joyce, died of cancer. Others make it their life quest to educate, like John Walsh. Who, if you didn't know, created America's Most Wanted and countless programs and laws to protect missing children, after his six year old son, Adam, went missing and they found his head in a drainage canal in 1981. The truth is, as much as we hate it, death and sickness are a part of life.  I made a promise to my sister as we talked about the situation we both had been given.  She told me, "Live, just live.  It is the greatest gift you can give me and your family." So now, as I embark on a new journey in this lifetime, I chose to live.
